Liberica Coffee: The World's Forgotten Bean That Malaysia Never Let Go

In October 2025, a Malaysian barista stood on the most prestigious coffee stage in the world.
The World Barista Championship in Milan. Six finalists. Competitors from Australia, China, Canada, Japan, and Denmark — countries with well-established specialty coffee identities, deep roasting cultures, and decades of competition pedigree.
Jason Loo represented Malaysia. And the coffee he chose to pour for the judges — the coffee he believed could hold its own against Panama Geisha, the undisputed darling of the specialty world — was Malaysian Liberica.
He placed fourth. The highest finish a Malaysian barista has ever achieved at the World Barista Championship. In the room that night, the world tasted something it had largely forgotten existed.
Malaysia had not forgotten. It never did.
The Bean Most of the World Has Never Heard Of
Before we go further, a quick orientation.
The global coffee industry runs almost entirely on two species. Arabica — the prestige bean, accounting for roughly 60% of world production — is the coffee behind specialty cafés, single origins, and the third wave movement. Robusta — tougher, higher in caffeine, less nuanced — makes up most of the remaining 40%, feeding the commercial roasters, instant coffee manufacturers, and espresso blends that dominate supermarket shelves.
Then there is Liberica.
Liberica accounts for less than 1% of global coffee production. It is so rare that many professional baristas have never brewed a cup of it. Most coffee textbooks cover it in a paragraph, if at all. In the global coffee conversation, it is treated as a curiosity — a footnote species that had its moment and was forgotten.
That framing is wrong. And Malaysia is the reason why.
Born in Africa, Shaped in Johor
Coffea liberica is indigenous to West and Central Africa — specifically the forests of what is now Liberia, Sierra Leone, and the surrounding region. It is a dramatically different plant from its more famous relatives. Where Arabica grows as a shrub that farmers can prune to manageable heights, a mature Liberica tree can reach eight to nine metres tall. Its leaves are enormous — broad, waxy, and deep green. Its cherries are larger than any other commercial coffee species, asymmetrical and often kidney-shaped, sitting on thick stems that require skilled hands to harvest.
In its homeland, Liberica had been thriving for centuries before the world noticed it. The moment it got noticed was a crisis.
In the 1870s, coffee leaf rust — the fungal pathogen Hemileia vastatrix — was tearing through Arabica plantations across Asia with catastrophic speed. Ceylon, once the world's largest coffee exporter, was effectively destroyed as a coffee-producing nation. Plantation owners across the British colonial network were desperate for an alternative.
Liberica was the answer. It was introduced with remarkable scale and efficiency from the early 1870s onwards. Scientists and colonial administrators were particularly impressed by the size and robustness of the plant — it appeared to grow easily and quickly, even in poor, depleted soils, and showed strong resistance to the disease that was wiping out Arabica. By the 1880s, Liberica was firmly established across the coffee belt. Between 1880 and 1900, global production volumes of Liberica were similar to that of Arabica in some countries. It was briefly considered the natural successor to Arabica as the world's primary coffee species.
That succession never happened. By the early 1900s, Robusta had been discovered — higher-yielding, easier to process, similarly disease-resistant — and Liberica was rapidly displaced. Its large cherries, with their thick and tough pulp, made processing difficult and inconsistent. Merchants and retailers found the oversized beans awkward to handle. Within a generation, Liberica had fallen out of favour almost everywhere.
Almost everywhere.
In Malaya, Liberica had found something it could not find elsewhere: perfect conditions and farmers who understood it. The clay and peat soils of Johor's west coast. The hot, humid lowlands barely fifteen metres above sea level. The Hainanese and Teochew immigrants who had built the kopitiam culture around its particular flavour. When the world moved on to Robusta, Malaysia's Liberica farmers largely stayed.
It was not stubbornness. It was the recognition, perhaps intuitive rather than articulated, that what they had was genuinely irreplaceable.
What Makes Liberica Different — In the Cup
The question every first-time drinker asks: what does it actually taste like?
The honest answer is: like nothing else.
Commercial Liberica — the kind that has been roasted dark, blended with sugar and margarine, and served in kopitiams for decades — gives an incomplete picture. Bold, earthy, intensely aromatic, with a thick body that coats the palate. That is real, and it is the flavour that built Malaysia's morning ritual. But it is the rough-cut version of what Liberica is capable of.
Specialty-processed Malaysian Liberica is a revelation. Liberica beans have the highest sugar content among all coffee species — a fact that translates directly into the cup. When processed carefully, it is intensely fruity in a way that surprises experienced coffee drinkers: notes of jackfruit, ripe mango, tamarind, and dark tropical berries. A viscous, rounded mouthfeel that is thicker and fuller than most Arabicas. A floral quality in the aroma — sometimes likened to jasmine, sometimes to dried flowers — that is unique to the species. And a lingering sweetness in the finish that stays long after the cup is empty.
The tasting notes from specialty producers tell the story better than any general description: honey-processed Liberica from Batu Pahat showing nectarine, peach, and walnut; natural-processed Liberica with lychee, strawberry, and a mint-like brightness; anaerobic natural Liberica — the processing method Jason Loo used in Milan — producing cherimoya, jackfruit, red dates, and amaretto in a single complex cup.
This is not folk medicine. These flavour profiles have been verified by some of the most rigorous palates in the international specialty coffee world.
The Science Behind the Flavour: MARDI's Quiet Revolution
Most people outside the Malaysian agricultural sector have never heard of MARDI — the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute. Within the world of Liberica, it is one of the most important coffee research programmes on earth.
MARDI's research station in Senggarang, Batu Pahat, has been developing improved Liberica clones since the early 1990s. The first — MKL1, released in 1992 — was a significant advance in both yield and flavour consistency. Subsequent clones have refined the programme further, each generation improving on processing characteristics, disease resistance, and cup quality. The latest MARDI breakthroughs — new clones MKL8, MKL9 & MKL10 that can be planted and harvested in eight to nine months, compared to the sixteen months required by traditional grafting methods — represent a step change in the economics of Liberica farming.
What MARDI has effectively done, over three decades of patient research, is create the world's most sophisticated Liberica improvement programme. The irony is that its most celebrated output was stolen.
MKL1 was smuggled out of Johor in the 1990s, taken to Riau in Indonesia where it was replanted and multiplied. The plantation there — now known as Meranti Liberica — has grown to surpass Malaysia's own Liberica acreage. The world's largest Liberica plantation grows a Malaysian clone on Indonesian soil.
That detail sits uncomfortably. But it also tells you everything about the quality of what MARDI produced: someone thought it was worth the risk to take it.
The Farmers Who Kept the Faith
Behind the research programmes and the specialty accolades are the farmers. And for Liberica, the farming story is one of loyalty tested by economics and still standing.
Liberica is not an easy crop. Its production costs are roughly three times higher than Arabica or Robusta per kilogram of green bean. The cherries ripen unevenly, requiring multiple selective hand-picking passes through the season. The thick pulp makes processing labour-intensive. The trees are tall, which complicates harvest. And for most of the past fifty years, the market price for Liberica offered little reward for that effort.
The average age of Liberica farmers in Johor today is around sixty years old. When oil palm companies came offering better returns on the same land, most chose to switch. The ones who stayed did so out of something harder to quantify than economics — a sense that this was their crop, their identity, their inheritance.
House of Kendal in Batu Pahat embodies that story. Adam and his father revived their family's coffee farm — which had been abandoned after a devastating heatwave fire in the 1960s — and rebuilt it into one of Malaysia's most internationally respected specialty Liberica operations. They manage a cluster of smallholdings, producing honey-processed and natural-processed Liberica that earns tasting notes — nectarine, peach, green mango, jackfruit — that would be remarkable from any origin, let alone one that most of the world had written off.
My Liberica in Kulaijaya, Johor, has been making a similar argument since 2009, building from farm to processing to roastery and eventually to café. Their collaboration with Australian barista Hugh Kelly and World Barista Champion Sasa Sestic in 2021 — which led to Kelly placing third at the World Barista Championship with Malaysian Liberica beans — was the first international proof point. The 2025 Jason Loo result was the confirmation.
Milan, 2025: The Night the World Took Notice
What Jason Loo did in Milan deserves to be understood in its full context.
The World Barista Championship is not simply a brewing competition. Each competitor delivers a fifteen-minute presentation — three courses of beverages, a complete narrative, a philosophical argument for the coffee they have chosen. The judges are tasting dozens of extraordinary coffees across multiple rounds. The coffee that a finalist brings to that stage is a statement about what they believe belongs in the conversation about the world's finest cups.
Loo chose to pair Malaysian Liberica against Panama Geisha — the most celebrated specialty coffee in the world, consistently the highest-scoring bean at auction, the reference point for what "extraordinary" means in specialty coffee. He called them the Introvert and the Extrovert. Geisha's precise, refined clarity against Liberica's bold, complex exuberance.
He placed fourth in the world.
The beans were processed by My Liberica using experimental fermentation cultures and precise drying controls specifically designed for the competition — months of development to bring out what the team believed Liberica was capable of at its absolute ceiling. What the six judges in Milan tasted that night was Malaysian Liberica at its most refined, its most intentional, its most internationally competitive.
Fourth place in the world. Against Geisha. With a bean that accounts for less than 1% of global production, grown in Johor's clay flatlands, by farmers whose average age is sixty.
That is not a footnote. That is an argument.
Liberica's Next Chapter: Climate, Rarity, and Rising Demand
The case for Malaysian Liberica is not just historical or sentimental. It is increasingly scientific and commercial.
Climate change is reshaping the global coffee map in ways that favour Liberica. By 2050, up to 50% of land currently suitable for Arabica production may become unsuitable as temperatures rise. Brazil, the world's largest coffee producer, has already forecast production declines. Vietnam's Robusta regions are under similar pressure. Arabica prices rose more than 60% year-on-year in 2024, with Robusta prices doubling compared to 2023 levels — driven by supply uncertainty and shrinking suitable growing areas.
Liberica's biological profile looks increasingly valuable in this context. Its deep taproot system — capable of penetrating the compacted clay soils of Johor that would defeat most other crops — allows it to access deep water tables and minerals that shallow-rooted plants cannot reach. Its tolerance to heat and humidity, evolved over millennia in West Africa's lowland forests, makes it naturally suited to a warming world. A new genetic study published in Nature Plants in 2025 revealed that Liberica is not one species but three distinct species, each with unique climate tolerances — a genetic diversity that offers extraordinary potential for breeding more resilient coffee crops.
In a world increasingly worried about where its coffee will come from, Liberica is no longer a curiosity. It is a strategic asset.
What Most People Still Get Wrong About Liberica
The reputation problem that Liberica still carries comes from one source: bad processing.
For most of its commercial history, Liberica was harvested without selectivity, dried on the ground, roasted dark to mask defects, and blended with margarine and sugar to create the kopi that Malaysians drank in kopitiams. That cup is not a lie — it is a genuine expression of how Liberica was used — but it is a ceiling, not a ceiling.
The transformation that specialty processing brings is the point that is still not widely understood. The same bean, harvested selectively when fully ripe, fermented with precision, dried under controlled conditions, and roasted with restraint, produces an entirely different drink. The licorice and astringent notes that were once considered Liberica's hallmarks have been shown, through careful fermentation work, to be processing artifacts rather than varietal characteristics. Remove the poor processing and what emerges is the jackfruit, the tropical flowers, the honey sweetness, the extraordinary body.
This is the central insight that My Liberica's collaboration with Sasa Sestic unlocked in 2021, and that Jason Loo demonstrated to the world in 2025. Liberica's reputation was not a verdict on the bean. It was a verdict on how the bean had been treated.
Malaysian farmers and producers have been improving that treatment for years. The world is only beginning to notice.
The Bean That Belongs to Malaysia
Every coffee has an origin. But origin is not just geography — it is the accumulation of the people, the research, the generations of knowledge, and the cultural relationship between a community and its crop.
Arabica belongs to Ethiopia in that deeper sense. Yemen shaped it. Colombia and Brazil scaled it. But it does not belong to any of them in the way that Liberica belongs to Malaysia.
Malaysia did not just grow Liberica. It kept it alive when the world abandoned it. It developed the world's most advanced Liberica research programme. It built a century of kopitiam culture around its flavour. It is now producing the specialty-grade Liberica that is competing at the highest levels of international coffee.
